      Papua New Guinea lies in the southwest Pacific, just south of the equator and about miles northeast of Australia. The largest of the Pacific Island nations, it includes the eastern half of the island of New Guinea which it shares with Indonesia and numerous offshore islands, the largest of which are New Britain, New Ireland, Bougainville. GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION —The islands of New Zealand have been shaped from the projecting crests of earth folds which rise as broad ridges from the floor of the South Pacific Ocean, 1, miles east of the continent of Australia. There are three main islands—North, South, and Stewart separated only by relatively narrow straits—with adjacent islets and a small group called Chatham Islands.

      At the South Pacific Forum in June Vanuatu supported a proposed Pacific Free Trade Area (FTA) that would initially include 14 countries in the region. The South Pacific Forum set up the Pacific Kava Council to work at protecting the regional rights to kava and its uses. Large-scale oceanic events such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence coastal and marine environments in the South Pacific. During an ENSO period, the pressure gradient reverses and becomes negative for a prolonged period with a consequent shift in .

      Leprosy Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, continues to be a major public health problem in FSM. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers leprosy to be epidemic in FSM. In WHO and the FSM Department of Health launched a massive program of leprosy screening and treatment in FSM, financed through a donation from a private Japanese foundation.
